Born in Moulins, Claude Louis Hector, duke de Vil-lars, as a military commander during the War of the spanish succession, won a great victory at Fried-lingen, Baden, over the Imperial armies (1702). Sent to the Cévennes against the CAMiSARDS,he forced the surrender of the Camisard leader jean cavalier. Defeated by the Austrian commander, Prince Eugene of savoy, and by the English commander, the duke of Marlborough, at Malplaquet (1709), he nonetheless inflicted losses on the enemy that prevented an invasion of France. His victory at Denain with France's sole remaining army saved the kingdom and allowed King louis XIV to gain better terms at the peace signed in 1713. Villars is said to have made many enemies by his cupidity and many friends by his audacity. He was elected to the Académie Française in 1714.
